Verdugos

Lo que ven aquí es un comic de 4 páginas que hice años atrás para la revista Hacha.
Desde mi punto de vista quizás lo más destacable es que fue de las escasas veces que intenté hacer yo el guión y dibujos pues, por lo general, creo que una historia se beneficia del intercambio de ideas entre guionista y dibujante. En muchos casos en que una sola persona si hizo cargo de ambas tareas, el resultado al final no cumple las expectativas… Obviamente, todo depende de la capacidad de él o ellos al momento de elaborar la historia.
En cualquier caso y a pesar de los años, esta historia me sigue agradando.

This is a 4-page comic I did years ago for the “Hacha” magazine.
Perhaps the most outstanding thing about it is that it was one of the few times that I tried to do both the script and the art. Generally, I believe that a story benefits from the exchange of ideas between scriptwriter and artist. In many cases, when only one person is in charge of both tasks, the final result is not up to expectations … Obviously, everything depends on his (if it´s only one person) capacity of theirs (if there are two) at the moment of creating the story.
In any case, in spite of all the years gone by, I still like this tale.

Hoy les dejo la primera hoja de mi versión de “Betty”. En realidad, les dejo las tres versiones, porque no quedaba conforme con el resultado. Pero no se preocupen, la segunda la hice solo dos veces y para la tercera ya sabía que queria hacer así que solo las hice una vez.

This is my first “Betty” page. Actually, these are three different versions of the first page, because I was not altogether happy with the results. But do not worry: there are only two versions of the second page, and by the time I tackled the third one I already knew what I wanted to do, so only I did it once.

Betty

Dentro de los guionistas de comic, Ricardo Barreiro fue uno de mis guionistas favoritos. No solo por las historias en si (que transmitian cierto sentido de la aventura que hoy veo raramente) sino también porque no descuidaba ciertos aspectos que visten y ambientan bien una historia.

Uno de esos aspectos a los que le prestaba atención era la tecnología, ya fuera esta una historia de guerra o de Ciencia-Ficcion. Escribo esto porque con los años he descubierto que me cansé de leer historias de CF en las que uno se da cuenta que son de CF porque el auto vuela, por poner un ejemplo, o porque la ciudad tiene un pretendido aire futurista, por poner otro. Por todo lo demás, tales historias pueden suceder (sin la más mínima modificación) en 1910 o 1980. Usualmente, además, no son muy buenas. Obviamente hay excepciones, pero dejemos eso para otro día.

Volviendo a Barreiro, uno de sus trabajos fue una historia llamada “Betty”, dibujada por Medrano, la cual me llamó la atención porque el diseño del caza que tripulaba el protagonista era triangular (La historia no es de las mejores precisamente). Y me gustó porque para algunas cosas me agradan las formas básicas, porque no agotan al lector obligándolo a esforzarse a tratar de entender que está viendo. Para ilustrar lo que me cae en gracia valgan los remanidos ejemplos de los cazas TIE (en forma de “H”) y del X-Wing de Star Wars y para lo opuesto la batalla final de la primer película de Transformers (en algún momento no solo dejo de entender quien es quien, sino que no distingo entre dos robots en el cuerpo a cuerpo).

Esa historia la perdí tiempo ha, y hace poco un conocido me pasó un escaneado. Como me siguió gustando, en ratos libres comencé a dibujar mi propia versión. Podrán ver que traté de seguir el diseño original, pero al segundo dibujo lo único que quedaba era la idea de un caza de forma triangular.

Ricardo Barreiro was one of my favorite comic writers. Not only for the stories themselves (that displayed a feeling for adventure that I rarely find today) but also because he did not neglect certain aspects that give a tale depth and atmosphere.

One of these aspects is that he payed attention to technology, whether it was a war story or a Sci-Fi one. I point this out because as years go by I got tired of reading Sci-Fi stories in which the only genre element is, for example, a flying car, or a city with an ostensible futuristic look, but which remain stories that could as easily take place in 1910 or 1980, without even a minimal modification. Usually, also, they are not very good. Obviously there are exceptions, but we´ll leave that discussion for a future post.

Getting back to Barreiro, one of his stories , "Betty", drawn by Medrano, called my attention because of the design of the fighter flown by the protagonist: it was triangular. The story is not one of his best, and yet there was something to it. It pleased me because I generally like basic forms: they do not exhaust the reader´s attention, they do not compel him to make the effort to understand what it is that he is seeing . Examples of what I like are the well-known TIE fighters (in the shape of an “H“) and the X-Wings, both from Star Wars. Examples of what I do not like appear in the final battle of the first Transformers movie ( there are moments in which you cannot tell who is who; neither can you tell one robot from the other when they grapple with each other).

I misplaced the “Betty” story long ago, but recently an acquaintance sent me a scanned version. As I found I still liked it, I started doing my version in my spare time. These are some of the images. You will see that I tried to follow the original design, but soon the only thing which remained from the first version was the fighter´s triangular shape.

Lansquenete / Landsknecht

Estos dos dibujos (uno terminado, el otro en lápiz) corresponden a un trabajo que hice y que descarté en su momento porque no se ajustaba a lo pedido.

El que está en lápiz era el original, pero me gustó el efecto de los ojos en el aire y así fue como nació la segunda ilustración (la terminada en tinta) en la cual el vikingo dejó de serlo y se volvió un lansquenete.

These two drawings (one finished, the other still only pencilled) belong to a commission I did but was turned down because it wasn´t what was expected.

The one in pencil was the original, but I like the effect of the eyes in the air and in this way the second illustration was born (fully inked), in which the Viking is replaced by a Landsknecht.

Ataque Extraterrestre / Extraterrestrial Attack

La ilustración que ven arriba es la versión final de algo que empezó como un simple garabato en un momento de ocio. Garabato que como me suele suceder, cobró vida propia y terminó en la serie de dibujos que incluí en este post. ¿Cuál fue la premisa? Captar el momento en que se produce una alerta por la irrupción de una fuerza de ataque extraterrestre contra el perímetro de una base o poblado humano.

Antes de seguir dejemos en claro que no pude (ni me interesó) evitar estar influenciado por imágenes provenientes de diversas ilustraciones de la Guerra de los Mundos de H. G. Wells o del ataque de los AT-AT en Hot. El problema es que para mí ambos ejemplos fallan en dos cosas: no me transmiten la sensación de amenaza. No me vienen a matar, vienen a maravillar al quien las ve.

La forma de hacer opresiva la imagen se lograrla oscureciendo el cielo y ¿que mejor para ello que un cielo tormentoso? De paso me daba la excusa perfecta para oscurecer las máquinas de guerra aumentando su peso relativo en la imagen (no me pregunten para que me tomé el trabajo de diseñarlas si las iba a dibujar en negro) y eso me llevó a volver un páramo la tierra por donde avanzaban. Lo cual me llevó, a su vez, a borrar a los centinelas humanos que había plantado porque desentonaban y encima tapaban a los atacantes. Entonces, los humanos fueron reducidos de tamaño (lo que aumentó el tamaño de las máquinas) y los vestí con una suerte de un traje de buceo atmosférico (la superficie del planeta fue arrasada por la guerra), lo cual me daba la justificación necesaria para la desolación reinante.

La segunda de las imágenes que ven es un estudio en lápiz que hice a mitad de camino, la cual incluye los trajes de los humanos que usé… Hago una observación que no hice antes: desde el principio y a propósito las máquinas de guerra son todas diferentes (los extraterrestres no tienen porque haber adoptado el principio terrestre de construcción en serie). Lo que me dieron los bocetos restantes fue el agregar como nivel tecnológico uno de 1900, no tanto porque el mundo de Wells haya influído en mi sino porque la ciencia-ficción retro me gusta. Quedaron en el tintero mis versiones de cómo habrían los “Land Cruisers” y “Land Destroyers” que Churchill mandó probar en 1915...

Y para terminar pueden ver finalizado el primer dibujo que había hecho y descartado, el cual quise entintar de forma más sencilla (por probar), lo cual casi logró hasta que se me ocurrió poner dos rayitas más ahí y otras dos allá y “acá falta algo” y así seguí.

PD: Tengo que hacer esos “Land Cruiser”


The illustration above is the final version of something that started like a simple doodle in a moment of spare time. A doodle which, as it usually happens in my case, came alive in the series of drawings that I included in this post. What was the premise? To depict the moment in which an alert takes place because of the irruption of a force of extraterrestrial attack against the perimeter of a military base or human town.

Before continuing, let's make clear that I could not (it was not even interesting to me) avoid being influenced by diverse illustrations of the War of the Worlds of H. G. Wells or of the attack of the AT-AT in Hot. The problem is that for me both examples fail in two things: they do not transmit a threatening sensation to me. The alien machines in those examples do not come to kill, but to marvel those who see them.

To make the image oppressive I darkened the sky, suggesting a storm front. The next step was to darken the war machines themselves, so as to increase their relative weight in the composition (do not ask me why I took so much trouble in designing them when they´d finally be rendered in full black). Then, I turned into a moorland the ground on which they were treading; I erased the watchtowers against which they were advancing as they were abit out of place and distracted the eye from and obstructed the vision of the attackers. Afterwards, I made the people smaller to stress the hugeness of the machines, and I dressed them in a kind of atmospheric diving suit (because the surface of the planet had been devastated and poisoned by war).

The second image is a half-finished study in pencil , which includes the suits I have spoken about. Something I did not point out before: from the beginning I made up my mind to make all the war machines different from each other (there was no reason for the aliens to have adopted mass production methods from Earth). In the remaining sketches I developed visually the technological aspect of the early 1900’ s, not only because of the influence of Wells’ novel but because I like “steampunk” science fiction. My versions of the “Land Cruisers” and “Land Destroyers” that Churchill ordered to try in 1915 are yet to be developed...

To conclude, you can see the first completed drawing that I had initially discarded, but then decided to ink in a simpler style. However, I started to add a litle cross-hatching here and there, and so on, and so on...
